what is a cuttlefish?

Cuttlefish are cephalopods of the genus Sepia, common in the oceans of the Old World and Australia. In ancient times cuttlefish were an important source of ink.
Cuttlefish are notable for their complex nervous systems and high intelligence. By expanding or contracting different colored sacs of pigment in their skin (chromatophores), they can control their coloration with marvelous verve and precision. Cuttlefish can flash long sequences of vivid intricate patterns across their bodies with lightning speed. They can also display several different patterns, on different parts of their bodies, simultaneously. Used in the context of a grammar of
formalized gestures and postures, this ability allows cuttlefish to communicate in complex and subtle ways. In fact, a cuttlefish is able to send several different messages, each directed at a specific nearby cuttlefish, at the same time.
